1:55 PM Is Facebook (FB -1.1%) becoming a game publisher? TechCrunch reports the company is "working with a handful of small mobile game developers" to promote their titles via mobile ads in exchange for a revenue cut. Such a program gives Facebook a way to monetize mobile gaming, where Apple and Google are the gatekeepers receiving 30% cuts on in-app purchases (not to mention downloads). The company's popular app install ads (recently said to have driven ~25M downloads) act as another mechanism. In spite of the mobile shift, Facebook still had 250M users playing games on its site as of March, up from 235M in Aug. '12. Read comments
