Yahoo forming tech news site with help of star NYT columnist • 11:57 AM

• Yahoo (YHOO +1.7%) is creating a new site focused on consumer tech news, and has hired popular NYT tech columnist/reviewer David Pogue to assist with its efforts.
• Pogue says he made his decision following visits to Yahoo HQ and talks with execs. "What I found surprised me ... This is a company that’s young, revitalized, aggressive — and, under Marissa Mayer’s leadership, razor-focused, for the first time in years ... Above all, she’s created a 'try stuff' atmosphere."
• Though Yahoo's startup M&A and mobile app projects have received more ink, the company has been gradually adding to its content arsenal over the last year, as it tries to halt display ad share losses. In addition to the tech news site, Yahoo is reportedly looking to create an online talk show starring Katie Couric.
• Yahoo's site will enter a crowded landscape. In addition to direct rivals such as Engadget, The Verge, BGR, and CNET, competition will be provided by the tech news sections of major papers such as the NYT and WSJ, sites catering to fans of particular platforms (i.e. iOS, Android, Windows Phone) and numerous business-oriented tech news sites.
